Latest question:

I have finally been placed on the waiting list to receive a kidney transplant. Are there specific things that I need to do to prepare for the transplant?
Answer

It is important that you remain positive, maintain your daily routine and do not spend your days waiting for the transplant centre to call!

Do:

  • Eat a balanced diet that is appropriate for renal patients
  • Notify your transplant centre of any change in your health status
  • Notify your transplant center if you change your address or phone number
  • Attend all your routine health care visits specific to your health center's requirements
  • Inform your transplant centre if you have to undergo a blood transfusion while on the transplant waiting list
  • Ensure that you submit blood samples while on the waiting list; the frequency for this would vary from center to center. If you are on hemodialysis, your dialysis center can do this for you. If you are not on dialysis, your nurse at your pre-dialysis clinic will help you arrange to have this done.
  • Continue to engage in fitness activities

I would like to know if I need to get vaccinated for the H1 N1 flu virus. I had my transplant on August 21, 2009. Some people tell me that I should get vaccinated and others tell me that I should not. I really do not know who to believe. I will trust you. Thank you.

"I was correct back in January 2000 when I knew my life was changing. I now appreciate being alive so much more. I try not to get caught up in negativity. Every day of good health is a gift to enjoy and make the most of. And through the Kidney Foundation and Transplant Companions I try to give back a little to others struggling with some of the same issues."
